Why audit your Google Business Profile?

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is often the first point of contact between your business and a potential customer. Before visiting your website, before walking through your door, customers check your Google profile: rating, reviews, photos, hours.

An incomplete or poorly optimized profile is revenue walking straight to the competitor across the street. According to the BrightLocal 2024 study, 87% of consumers check Google profiles before choosing a local business.

What our tool measures

Our audit tool analyzes the 5 strategic zones of Google Business Profile (business info, reviews, photos and videos, posts, knowledge panel) against the most important local SEO signals according to the Moz 2023 local search ranking factors. Each public criterion receives a status (ok, needs attention, critical) and a score proportional to its weight in Google's algorithm.

The scale is deliberately strict: an average profile gets an average score. The free preview scores the 8 criteria that can be checked from the outside, and they add up to exactly 100 points: no rule of three, you can redo the maths yourself. The two heaviest are your rating (24 points) and your review volume (22), followed by secondary categories (17), website (11), photos (9), phone and hours (6 each) and practical details (5). The other 19 criteria of the full audit stay locked here: they need your profile connected to Up Review (response rate and speed, publishing regularity, photo variety, services, knowledge panel).

The criteria for a strong Google Business profile

1. Profile name

The name must match exactly your legal business name. Google penalizes profiles that stuff keywords into the name (e.g., "Dupont Bakery: best artisan bread in Montpellier"). This violates the Google Business Profile guidelines.

2. Primary category

Category is the number one local SEO signal. A poorly chosen category can make you invisible in relevant searches. Google offers more than 4,000 categories: choose the most specific one possible. "Italian restaurant" is better than "Restaurant".

3. Average rating

The competitive threshold sits at 4.5 stars. Below 4.0, click-through rate drops by 30 to 40% according to BrightLocal data. Our Google review calculator shows you how many 5-star reviews you need to reach your target.

4. Review volume

Volume matters as much as the rating. Google trusts profiles with a significant volume of reviews more:

Review volumeCredibility levelRanking impact
Under 6Practically ignored by GoogleVery low
6 to 24Limited visibilityLow
25 to 99Solid baseModerate
100+Authority threshold crossedHigh

To grow your volume quickly, an automated collection strategy is essential.

5. Physical address

Profiles without a visible address lose 30 to 40% of local visibility. If you are a service-area business (SAB), set at least your coverage area in the GBP settings.

6. Phone number

A local landline number, with the area code of the town you trade in, strengthens the geographic anchor of your profile. Mobile numbers work, but send a weaker trust signal.

7. Website

The link to your website lets Google verify NAP (Name, Address, Phone) consistency between your profile and your site. This consistency is an important local ranking factor. The NAP must be identical down to the comma.

8. Hours

Up-to-date hours, including special and holiday hours, show Google that your profile is active and reliable. Profiles with incorrect hours receive user reports that affect ranking.

9. Description

The GBP description (750 characters max) should include your main business type and city. It is a textual signal Google uses to understand your positioning. Many businesses leave this field blank: an easy opportunity to seize.

How to improve your audit score

Actions with immediate impact

  1. Complete every field: description, hours, landline phone. Every empty field is a lost point.
  2. Check your category: go to GBP > Edit > Category. Test whether a more specific category exists.
  3. Reply to your reviews: positive and negative alike. Profiles that reply to more than 50% of reviews rank better locally (Moz data).

Medium-term actions

  1. Launch a review campaign: aim for 25 reviews minimum, then 100. Use an automated collection tool to multiply your volume by 4 to 6.
  2. Post regularly: Google Posts (offers, news, events) show Google that your profile is active.
  3. Add photos: at least 10 recent photos, less than 3 months old. Profiles with photos get 42% more requests for directions (Google).

Your Google profile and your reviews form a virtuous circle. The more optimized your profile, the more visible it becomes. The more visible it is, the more reviews you receive. The more positive reviews you have, the better you rank.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Google Business Profile audit?
A GBP audit evaluates the quality and completeness of your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business). Our tool analyzes the 5 strategic zones tied to Google: the business profile (categories, contact details, hours, practical details), reviews (rating and volume), photos, posts, and the knowledge panel. Each public criterion receives a score that contributes to an honest overall score out of 100.
Why is my audit score low even though I have good reviews?
The audit score does not measure your reviews alone. It evaluates the 8 criteria that can be measured publicly, out of the 27 covered by the full Up Review audit. You can have an excellent rating and plenty of reviews, yet still lose points on secondary categories, phone number, hours or the practical details of your profile. Each criterion carries a different weight in the final score, and the scale is deliberately strict: an average profile gets an average score, not an inflated one.
How does the audit of my profile work?
Our tool reads your Google profile exactly as your customers see it and evaluates each criterion automatically, in seconds. This free preview covers the essential criteria. Advanced criteria (services, review response rate and speed, publishing regularity, photo variety) are analyzed in the full audit carried out with Up Review.
How often should I audit my Google profile?
We recommend an audit every 3 months, or after any major change (address, category, or hours update). Competing profiles keep evolving: a score of 80 today can become insufficient in 6 months if your competitors optimize theirs.
How can I quickly improve my GBP score?
The fastest wins: 1) fill in your 3 secondary categories, which alone carry 17 points, 2) add a phone number and link your website, 3) complete your hours, including special days, and the practical details of your profile, 4) keep a steady flow of new reviews, since rating and volume together carry 46 of the 100 points. These actions alone can gain you 15 to 25 points.
Is my data kept after the audit?
Your contact details are only used to get back to you if you want us to. We do not keep the HTML content of the pages analyzed. You can request deletion of your data at any time via our contact page.
