A customer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini rather than Google, and the answer names a competitor, not you. Here are the 7 levers to get cited by AI engines, from most decisive to most technical.
Unlike a Google ranking, there is no top spot to chase. There is an answer, and either your business is in it or it is not. Here is how the mechanism works and the levers that actually move it.
What is an AI citation?
An AI citation is the moment a generative AI reuses your business, your product, or a piece of your content to build its answer. It can name your brand with a direct link to your page, the way ChatGPT Search often does, or just mention you in the text with no link, as Gemini frequently does.
This mechanism differs from classic search on one key point: there is no list of ten results to compare. There is one answer, generated for one person, at one moment.
The 4 formats of AI citation
In practice, a business can appear in an AI answer four different ways. Telling them apart helps you pick the right lever.
The citation with a direct link. The AI cites one of your pages and offers a clickable link to it, the way ChatGPT Search or Perplexity does with numbered footnotes.
The brand mention with no link. The AI names your business in the body of its answer with no link back, often when it answers from general knowledge rather than a real-time search.
The inclusion in a generated list. When a user asks "the 5 best restaurants in the neighborhood," the AI builds its own ranking. Making that list, with or without a link, is already a form of citation.
The recommendation inside a local block. For a local query, an AI like Gemini leans on the Google ecosystem, Google Business Profile first, to recommend a specific business.
ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews: how each picks its sources
Every AI engine has its own citation mechanic. The table below lays out what triggers a citation on each.
| AI engine | What triggers the citation | Citation format | Bot to allow |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT (search) | Indexed, well-ranked, recent page | Direct link, footnote | OAI-SearchBot |
| Perplexity | Recent sources, several domains cross-referenced per answer | Numbered direct link | PerplexityBot |
| Gemini | Grounding with Google Search in real time, Google ecosystem (listing, reviews) | Inline citation to the source used | Standard Googlebot |
| Google AI Overviews | Page that already ranks well for the query | Link to the source, inside a summary | Standard Googlebot |
Gemini deserves a note. Its grounding with Google Search, documented by Google AI for Developers, runs a real-time search before the model answers, with inline citations back to the source pages. It is not frozen memory: it is an active search on every question.
The 7 levers to earn an AI citation on your business
You do not need to run all seven at once. Here are the levers that count, from most decisive to most technical.
1. Answer the question in the first lines
An AI extracts a passage, not a full page. Put the answer in one or two clean sentences at the top of the page and of every section. A crisp definition or a numbered procedure is far easier to cite than a long warm-up.
2. Source every claim with a verifiable number
This is the best-documented lever. Per Princeton's GEO: Generative Engine Optimization study (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024), adding statistics and citations can lift visibility in AI answers by up to 40%. An unsourced opinion is almost never picked up.
3. Publish fresh and show a real "last updated" date
Per the Seer Interactive study of more than 5,000 URLs cited by AI, roughly 65% of citations point to content published within the past year. The bias is even sharper on some engines: 85% of content cited by Google AI Overviews and 80% of content cited by Perplexity was published between 2023 and 2025.
4. Rank well in classic organic search first
AI citation largely follows Google ranking. Ahrefs, on 1.4 million prompts, measured an 88.5% citation rate for pages already appearing in organic search results, against only 1.9% for Reddit content, even though Reddit is heavily represented in ChatGPT's source pool. Without solid baseline SEO, AI citation stays out of reach.
5. Allow AI crawlers to read your site
An AI can only cite what it can read. OpenAI documents four crawlers: OAI-SearchBot feeds ChatGPT search, GPTBot is for model training, ChatGPT-User acts on live user requests, and OAI-AdsBot verifies ad pages. Only the first really matters for citation: blocking it by accident in robots.txt is self-exclusion from ChatGPT answers. On the Google side, the Search Central documentation, updated December 10, 2025, confirms that no special optimization is required beyond standard SEO best practice.
6. Keep brand identity consistent everywhere
AI engines match entities, not phrasing. Your business name, address, category, and services should read identically on your site, your Google Business Profile, directories, and social profiles. That consistency is how an AI ties you to the right question.
7. Build up the local signal, Google reviews first
For a local business, this last lever often outweighs everything else. It deserves a section on its own.
The local case: Google reviews and Google Business Profile
When an AI answers "best barbershop near me" or "which restaurant should I book tonight," it almost never cites a blog post. It leans on the best-rated, most active businesses on their Google listing, with recent reviews at the top of the signal.
At Up Review, we see this pattern play out on the ground. A neighborhood restaurant near Montpellier, France, moved its Google rating from 2.8 to 3.7 in six weeks, collecting more than 1,700 reviews and scanning nearly 5,000 QR codes at checkout: exactly the kind of high-volume freshness signal that local AI recommendations look for before naming one business over another. The mechanic works identically for a Chicago pizzeria or a Manchester barbershop.
Two concrete moves follow for a local business. First, a complete, active Business Profile with up-to-date information and recent photos. Second, a steady flow of reviews rather than a one-off spike: that is exactly the point of Google reviews management with Up Review, from in-store collection to automated AI replies.
How to check whether you are already cited by AI
Two methods, from the simplest to the most tooled. The manual method: ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini the questions your customers would ask, and note whether you show up and through which source.
The tooled method automates it. Up Review's AI Visibility feature queries 5 engines (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews) with your target questions, on the cadence you choose, and returns a score out of 100 plus the list of businesses cited alongside you. The mistakes that block an AI citation
A handful of mistakes come back constantly and cancel every effort above. Blocking OAI-SearchBot or an equivalent AI crawler in robots.txt by accident, thinking you are protecting against scraping. Quoting numbers with no link to their source, which an AI cannot verify and therefore rarely reuses. Leaving a Google Business Profile incomplete or a rating stagnant while competitors keep collecting fresh reviews. Publishing content that rehashes Google's first page without adding anything, giving the AI no reason to prefer you over the original source. And piling up multiple close pages on the same question, which dilutes the signal instead of reinforcing it.
None of these levers guarantees a citation. Together, they sharply raise the odds of appearing in the answer rather than the blind spot.
